Trip to Maintirano

A few weeks back, well actually about a month now, I had the opportunity to go back with a friend to the remote town of Maintirano. It was an amazing trip and showed me why the aircraft is such a needed tool here in Madagascar. He and his wife live in this town and are pastoring a church there.

It took us 22 hours to get there from Antananarivo, the whole trip is only about 560km however the first 200km only take 4 hrs because the road is fairly nicely paved so that makes the next 360km take 18hrs.

This is one stretch where we got stuck.

Followed this herd though a village.

We saw lots of sections that looked like this.

Madagascar has such beautiful countryside!

We drove through part of the Tsingy forest.

More Tsingy.

On the beach in Maintirano, a good way to end our trip.

The ocean here is very red in colour because of the silt caused by erosion that the rivers pour into the sea.

There is the road that we drove.

This is a much safer and faster way to travel. It takes only an hour and a half to fly back so for many missionaries, like my friend, the aircraft is the only reliable means of transportation especially in an emergency.
