Our Day in Photos

7:00 am - Breakfast time, mommy making juice; and the kids waiting patiently this time (Yay!!) for breakfast to be prepared.

8:30 am - In the car going to the Lemur Park with Oma! We were a bit unsure about leaving at this time of the day, since the traffic is normally horrendous! But we were pleasantly surprised, and got through town fairly quickly.

10:00 am - Welcome to the Lemur Park

12:00 pm - Lunchtime at the park. Subs for everybody in cool wooden carved sub-shaped plates.

1:00 pm - And the traffic home.

2:30 pm - My exciting find of the day!!  Dill seeds! I've never seen them here before, so this was a must buy when I spotted a single packet of seeds at the store.

3:00 pm - Tea time! It was kind of misting rain most of the day. Cyclone Helen is brewing on the west coast in the Mozambique Channel right now, so this generally brings clouds and rain and sometimes wind into our capital city.

Unfortunately Faith accidentally threw her brand new Frisbee into the neighboring lake at our house.
Happy to have the Frisbee rescued by helpful gardeners!

Playing and Painting

5:00 pm - I decided to unpack our Grade 3 curriculum and let the kids look through the new books (always a hit in our house) while I prepared dinner.

7:00 pm - Pre-lights-out quiet play and reading time.

How to Spend 5 Days Doing Nothing

We just spent five lovely days at the beach and it was, in a word, amazing. A piece of heaven on earth for our entire family. Currently, we are enjoying having Rob's mom visit us for the second time since moving to Madagascar, and we were so excited to be able to share the beach with her also.

Believe it or not, even though we live on the island of Madagascar, this was our family's first time going to the beach! It's a long ways away from where we live by car. Antananarivo sits in the middle of the island on a high plateau, at about 4500ft elevation. If you want to visit the beach, you're looking at an 8-12 hour drive to get there, either west or east.

Every couple of months MAF organizes what we call "MMR" (Madagascar Mission Run). These runs fly a pre-planned circuit, going to and from a few different runways in isolated areas, and pick up or drop off people needing transport. It so happened, March's MMR circuit was planned nearby the Island of St. Marie. A beautiful vacation spot on the east coast of Madagascar. So at a lesser cost and a mere hour and a half flight, we were able to finally experience the beauty of the beach.

Our mission on this holiday, was to do nothing. And it was wonderful. After breakfast we walked over to a great little beach, with enough sand to keep 4 little ones busy for days. Rob took Faith out a ways to a coral reef and she learned how to snorkel, and we soaked up plenty of sun. Beach sun is far better than city sun! :) Besides ourselves, there were 2 other holidaying couples on the island---so it was quiet! We literally had the beach to ourselves.

It was a memorable time, and we were so thankful for the break from life in the city. To get away and focus on doing nothing but being together, without agenda, without any place to go, we returned home refreshed and feeling ready to work again.
