Things are pretty lush around here at this time of year. You wouldn't know that we haven't had as much rain as we would normally have during the month of February. Cyclone season is upon us now, which really affects the coastal regions of Madagascar more than us. However, as I write this, none are brewing near the island of Madagascar for now.

I have tried to search around for the name of this lily. It is one of the most fragrant flowers we have in our yard. This is definitely one of those times I wish we could transport smells online.  :)

Medical Mission Run

One of the regular flights MAF has the privilege to do is an MMR in a very remote area called Marolambo. MMR stands for Medical Mission Run. As you might imagine, this flight transports medical professionals to these areas, but it also allows others who need to get to this area to join an already scheduled flight.

Marolambo is an isolated village with a population of around 26,000 (as of 2005), and located southeast of Antananarivo, approximately 120km away as the crow flies. It can easily take up to 2 days by car to get to. During the rainy season, double that, or perhaps don't bother trying at all. Whereas in the plane, you can be brought back to the capital city in a mere 40 minutes. Potentially life-saving. Back in 2007, MAF decided to pave the runway there to make it safer to land during the rainy season. As well, due to the extremely short airstrip (450m) having it paved made it possible to increase the weight/passengers we can transport.

This village happens to be a sort of hub in the local area. There is actually a school there and a market.

Recently, MAF has been able to distribute calendars containing Bible verses in the Malagasy language. As well, dear relationships between some villagers and MAFers can be built as we continuously fly into this isolated region on a regular basis.

Steady Work and The Need

Probably the thing that keeps coming up in our minds since returning to Madagascar is the shortage of workers within MAF, especially maintenance engineers. This is why Rob went to Chad to help with their engine install back in November, and there is need for extra help in Angola at the end of March for the same kind of thing. Meanwhile, our own program is flying many many hours. With the return of Josh, our other Canadian pilot, in January, we are back up to three pilots in the program. And with these three flyers, the planes can be kept in the air a lot of the time.

Our little plane, the C182, is busy with a lot of church and missionary flying, helping out the local pastor spread the gospel, plant churches, and offer support to highly remote people and their local Christian families.

The Caravan is hauling doctors and medical teams, and continues to work with Mercy Ships during their final months in country before they move on to other places in Africa.

The work is great, the workers are few. It can be a little overwhelming at times, when we look around and see a constant stream of need around us. MAF is obviously in Madagascar and other poverty stricken nations because we have to be.

 During Rob's time in N'Djamena, Chad, they were able to take a short break and ride some camels.
